Britney Spears is saying gimme more to Sabrina Carpenter.
One day after the “Espresso” singer brought the house down with her performance at the 2024 MTV VMAs, during which she paid homage to the “Piece of Me” singer, Britney shared her reaction. And one aspect that caught her eye? Sabrina making out with someone on stage who was not her boyfriend Barry Keoghan.
"I didn't watch the VMAs, but I did see stuff on my phone from YouTube of Sabrina Carpenter," Britney said in a video posted to Instagram Sept. 12. "Why is she kissing a alien on stage?"
During the show, Sabrina—who won the Moon Person for Song of the Year and was nominated for five other awards, including Artist of the Year—performed a medley of hits off her album Short N’ Sweet, including “Please Please Please,” “Taste” and “Espresso.” It was during that middle portion of the set where Sabrina played the bridge to Britney's "Oops!...I Did It Again" as an astronaut and blue alien joined her.
As for what happened next? Well, after the astronaut and alien fought for her attention, she planted a passionate kiss on the alien before kicking them off the stage. And while Britney admired her creativity, she wasn’t entirely sure the subtle reference to her infamous 2003 VMAs kiss with Madonna made sense.
"Adore her, I love her to death, [but] I didn't understand that part," Britney continued in her video. "Why didn't she kiss a girl? Like that was weird. I also thought that the whole thing was kind of weird altogether."
Despite Britney's critique of the "Slim Pickins" singer's performance, the "Toxic" singer went on to praise Sabrina for making her feel "cool."
"She said my name on the red carpet and I thought that was kind of cool," the 42-year-old, who shares sons Sean and Jayden, both 18, with ex Kevin Federline—noted. "I forget I'm famous sometimes because I'm a mom. But I thought it was kinda cool. She made me cool."
After jokingly screaming, she added, "Okay, maybe not."
